I think the mother is thinking about ... what she's going to do later on in life, and if she's going to live until old age, how horrible the Great Depression is,seeing all the people out in the street just like her with no home, food, water.

Seriously Easter I'm thinking the same thing as you!!!! The Great Depression was something very horrible.
